Lake Tahoe Unified School District News
South Lake Tahoe, CA – Lake Tahoe Unified School District Superintendent Dr. James Tarwater announced that parents in the Tahoe Basin will have additional opportunities for enrollment in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District for the 2012/13 school year
The legislation changes the requirements for kindergarten entry from five years old by December 2 to five years old by September 1, so that all children enter kindergarten at age five. This gives four-year-olds with fall birthdays an additional year of preparation before entering kindergarten. Lake Tahoe Unified elementary schools have had a similar program – “Preppie K” — in place since the 2006/07 school year. Superintendent Tarwater, who introduced the program, calls it “a gift of time”.
On February 14, 2012 the Board of Education of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District approved a policy to implement a Transitional Kindergarten program which will be phased in over three years and be fully implemented by 2014.
- In 2012-13, children who have their fifth birthday between November 1 and December 2 will be admitted to the transitional kindergarten program at all four elementary schools at the beginning of the 2012/13 school year.
- In 2013-14, children who have their fifth birthday between October 1 and December 2 will be admitted to the transitional kindergarten program.
- In 2014-15 and each school year thereafter, children who have their fifth birthday between September 1 and December 2 will be admitted to the transitional kindergarten program.
Residency
South Lake Tahoe schools have become more attractive to Tahoe Basin residents on both sides of the state line in recent years due to the improvements in facilities and innovative programs, including a full-day kindergarten program which allows more opportunities for students to develop academic and social skills.
Currently, parents who wish to enroll their children in LTUSD schools must physically reside within District boundaries. Nevada residents enroll their children by paying a tuition fee of $5,500/year.
Effective July 1, 2012, Senate Bill 381 amends state Education Code to allow parents to satisfy the residency requirements by being employed within the boundaries of a school district.
“The purpose of SB 381 is to provide parents with an opportunity to participate in their children’s education by allowing them to enroll their children in a school near their workplace. This allows parents to attend after-school and evening school events and to be an active member of the educational community”, Dr. Tarwater said.
In order to enroll a student under this exception to the residency requirements, parents must be physically employed within the Lake Tahoe Unified School District boundaries for at least ten (10) hours per week during the school week. Applications for 2012/13 enrollment will be considered on a case-by-case basis depending on classroom space availability and other factors.
